A quality knife handle material.

Light pinkish brown in colour often lightly veined in red. Resembles some of the lighter coloured rosewoods and is often tinted to serve as a lower cost alternative to the real thing.

Camphor Wood. An evergreen of the Laurel family - very aromatic. The burls are very rare. The tree grows to heights of 100 feet with diameters of 2-4 feet. The heartwood is a light yellow-brown, reddish, or sometimes light chocolate with lighter indistinct sapwood. It has a slender and delicate texture and exquisite patterns. It does not distort easily, works very well and takes a good finish, which makes it an approproate wood for knifemaking.

The same tree as Sonokeling rosewood but having darker and heavier wood due to different growth conditions.

Felling is now strictly controlled by the Indian government and logs are sold by auction to a small number of government approved bidders only. Export is also stritctly controlled by the Indian government to reinforce the value and precious nature of this timber so that it will remain available for a long time into the future.
