Description

Helle of Norway is one of the few makers who have never left home — still hand-making every knife in the same fjord village where they started.

Founded in 1932 in Holmedal in western Norway by brothers Steinar and Sigmund Helle, making small sheath knives for local hunters, fishermen and farmers. They quickly built a reputation for exceptionally high quality blades.

It’s still family-owned, now run by the grandsons, and still produced in that small facility in Holmedal. Family-owned, world-renowned brand known for producing aesthetically stunning, highly functional knives, each handcrafted in Holmedal using natural materials and strict adherence to Scandinavian knife making. About 50 people work there today and each knife goes through up to 45 manual processes from sanding and polishing handles to forming the Scandi grind.

Steel: Helle is famous for its proprietary triple-laminated steel. Two layers of tough stainless steel (18/8) protect the blade against breakage and corrosion, while the high carbon core provides a superb cutting edge. They offer it in two versions, triple-laminated stainless and triple-laminated carbon, plus single-layer steels mainly from Sandvik.

The workhorse single-layer is Sandvik 12C27, described as their most well-rounded steel with excellent edge performance allowing razor sharpness, high hardness, exceptional toughness, and good corrosion resistance.

Grind: Traditional Scandinavian flat grind, easy to maintain.
